Local identity
Identity is derived on the device from three phrases. No registration or central account is required.
End-to-end encryption
Every message is signed and then encrypted before transmission. Decryption takes place on the recipient’s device.
Relays without storage
Relay servers transmit messages without maintaining an inbox. Pending messages remain on the devices.
Multi-server architecture
A client can use several relays. Public relays may interconnect when explicitly authorized. Private relays remain isolated.
Open source
The source code is public (AGPL licence). The protocol is documented and designed to be reimplemented in other languages.
Encrypted local data
History, keys and sensitive data are stored encrypted on the device. PIN locking is available.
A distributed architecture
FreeSpeech separates message transport, private relays and push notifications.
Public relays
They may exchange traffic when explicitly authorized. A device can use several relays.
Private relays
They accept only identities their administrator allowed or invited, and reject communication with other relays.
Push servers
They are independent from relays. They only transmit the notification required to wake the app, never message content.
Host your own servers
A family, an association, a company: a private relay is set up in minutes and administered without restarts.
From the command line
Invite, allow or ban a person or a sibling server, tune the logs and follow one identity: one command, immediate effect, no connection cut.
Respectful logs
No content, no key, shortened identifiers. A precise trace is limited to one hour and leaves a mark.
Web console Pro
One page for all your servers: accounts with roles, two-factor sign-in, audit of every action.
Features
- Chats and groups with roles, moderation and key renewal.
- Photos, videos and files with resumable transfers and chunk verification.
- Replies, reactions, message editing and deletion, typing indicator and optional read receipts.
- Contact addition by QR code or one-time card, with a safety number.
- Push notifications independent from message transport.
- Encrypted backup, printable recovery key and multiple devices for one identity.
- Lost or stolen phone: PIN lock, remote wipe from another device, and migration to a new identity that warns your contacts and groups.
- French, English and Spanish interfaces, light and dark themes.
Security and limitations
The code and protocol are public. FreeSpeech is provided as is, without warranty.
- No ratchet providing forward secrecy at present: compromise of a long-term key may expose intercepted past communications.
- Some metadata remains visible to relays, including correspondents, timings and connections.
- Losing the three phrases means losing the identity. There is no account recovery.
- Attachments are retrieved from the sender or another group member.
- Android and Windows are currently available. iOS and audio/video calls are planned, with no announced date.
The full security model is described in the technical documentation.
